  • Description
Beautiful oil on canvas painting by the American artist, Frederick D. Ogden. Signed lower right and dated 1935. Titled, signed and dated verso. Condition is good. Overall framed in its original Newcomb Macklin frame in fine condition 30 by 42 inches.

Frederick D. Ogden was a well known and respected American painter who lived during the first half of the twentieth century, whose landscapes were heavily influenced by the work of the Hudson River School. He was also one of the first African-American artists to be widely accepted for his art.

Born in Hancock County on the Mississippi River in Illinois in 1892. Is a direct descendant of John Ogden the Pilgrim, who settled in Southampton, Long Island in 1642.

Always associated with the arts, he earned a living variously as a musician, designer of stage scenery and engraver. In recent years he has devoted his whole time to painting. Self taught, he is a great admirer or the nineteenth century English landscape school. Adapting what he has learned from his studies of these masters of the American landscape he knows and loves so well, his paintings have a sincerity and attention to detail seldom found among his contemporaries.
