Description
A painted neoclassical open armchair in the manner of Mayhew and Ince circa 1770 having a carved molded oval back with arm rests having carved acanthus and Greek key and a tufted arm rest.
The armchair is similar to the work of the London cabinet-making firm of Mayhew and Ince and relates specifically to a suite the firm provided to Richard Myddelton for the saloon at Chirk Castle (see Michael Hall, 'Chirk Castle, Denbighshire', Country Life, July 16, 1992, pp 54-7, fig.7) Both chairs have a similar applied fluted seat rail articulated with five roundels at the front and with fluted side rails. The construction of the seat frame with cut-outs to fit glue-cramps is also found on furniture supplied by Mayhew and Ince. -
