Description
Joshegan – late 19th Century. This long majestic Josheghan corridor carpet from central Persia is a symphony of color and design. Inspired by post-classical Persian design of the 18th century, a sophisticated underlying geometry creates a network of repeat square and circular implicit forms traced by a network of foliage. Blossoms and flowering buds create a dynamic repeat design each colorful ornament illuminating against a deep indigo ground. The modulation of color seen here, known as ‘abrash’ in Farsi, is fully in keeping with traditional Persian notions of design. The long and narrow proportions of this piece comply with those of Near Eastern architecture and further suggest that it was woven, perhaps as a special commission, for the local market.
