With the Initials “DWMC” for DeWitt Clinton and his Wife Maria Clinton
Reference: Please see David Sanctuary Howard New York and the China Trade, plate c66, page 104 and the discussion on page 113. The State Department, the New York Historical Society, and Winterthur Museum also own parts of this service.
Provenance: This very large service was made for DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828) and his wife Maria, who were married in 1796. Clinton was an influential force in the political life of New York; he was a member of the New York State Assembly, a United States Senator, mayor of New York City, a candidate for President of the United States, and governor of New York. -
