Description
A superb English mahogany writing table having an inset leather top, banded in mahogany with a rare and unusual rope twist moulding, having four working drawers on either long side and “dummy” drawers on the two short sides, each drawer having unusual brass handles of geometric shape set within a raised mahogany drawer face above a leaf carved moulding over eight legs, sets of two positioned under the outside drawers, the legs comprising, geometric shapes crested with tapered caps over radially reeded discs above tapered socles mirroring the caps with a reeded moulding above tapered reeded legs on a moulded socle terminating in carved claw feet. Circa 1810.
This writing table is clearly bespoke and is of distinct quality. The rope twist moulding, the handles and the legs are a unique combination of decorative styles and speak of the influence of Thomas Hope (1769-1831), the aesthete responsible for a rarefied sense of design during the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. Hope’s influence was substantial, particularly among those people who considered themselves aesthetes such as the members of the Society of Dilettanti. Unfortunately, by the beginning of the 19th century, bespoke furniture was the exception and not the rule and random, high quality makers capable of such a writing table, were many. This writing table is a good example of some of the very high quality furniture made to order in this time period. This table is en suite with the metamorphic library table also in this listing. Both pieces share the same handle and molding configuration. -
