This English lost-wax casting (cire perdue) bronze door knocker is in the Art Nouveau style, the piece depicts a beautiful Greek sculpture holding a small model of the Venus de Milo which the sculptor is measuring with a pair of calipers. This is by far the best Art Nouveau bronze door knocker I have ever scene.
Harry Bates was born in 1850 and he was a British sculptor, he was elected to the Royal Academy in 1892 as A.R.A. and was an active, if intermittent, member of the Art Workers Guild. Harry was a central figure in the British movement know as New Sculpture. Over his short life he created some of England's more important sculptures as represented in many museums and collections around the world.
A door knocker like no other, the quality of the sculpture is stunning.
