The Schleiss family was a patron of the arts in the region. In 1909 the Franz and Emilie Schleiss Art Workshop opened its doors and began making ceramics and merging with Wiener Keramic, which served as a sales association for the Wiener Werkstätter. The united Wiener and Gmundner Keramik and Gmundner Tonwarenfabrik Scheiss Cmbh attracted many talented ceramic artists such as Peche, Powolny, Zülow and Hartmann and turned Gmundnen into an artist colony.
