Description
Marble topped marquetry commode after Riesener
French, late 19th Century
Height 91cm, width 173cm, depth 64cm
This exquisite commode takes after a commode made by the master of 18th Century furniture, Jean-Henri Riesener, which is currently housed in the Chateau de Fontainebleau. All the sides of the commode, except the back, are curved, and it is topped with a beautiful shaped veined marble top. Below the top there is a frieze panel of ormolu-mounted drawers which sit above two larger drawers. At each side of the commode there are further ormolu mounts in the form of leaves. The main panel at the front centre of the commode is decorated with an exquisite marquetry design which depicts a vase with a fruit basket and flowers. At either side of this there are panels with geometric, diamond-shaped wooden patterns.
