Description
Two antique Neoclassical style gilt bronze tripod stands
French, late 19th Century
Height 111cm, width 38cm, depth 38cm
These large, gilt bronze tripod stands have been designed in a majestic French Neoclassical style.
Both stands serve to support bowls, raising them high off the ground. The bowls are held in place by gilt bronze friezes, ornamented with entwined leafy vines. The bowl mouths project above this level, and are decorated with entrelacs.
The foliate friezes are mounted, at three points, with large goat heads. These goats are powerfully portrayed, with tall spiralled horns, frowning facial expressions, and long wavy beards.
In each stand, three legs extend down from the goats鈥 heads to the ground. These are decorated with fruiting vine patterns and leafy forms, and are secured by a connecting band, before terminating in furry shins and goat hooves. Circular motifs, with ball tips, decorate the space between the feet. Both items are set on stepped triform bases. -
