Description
A stylish Showa period cloisonné enamel beaker vase by Ando, with a single pink orchid on a mat black ground, with the Ando wire mark in the base and assay stamped silver mounts. Japanese, c1950.
Height 10 inches Diameter 5 inches
Footnote: For a very similar example with a white orchid in the Victoria and Albert Museum, see ‘Japanese Cloisonné’ Gregory Irvine, London 2006, pl. 122. In ‘The Seven Treasures: Exhibition of Cloisonné from the V&A and the Edwin Davies Gift’, the online magazine artdaily, Editor & Publisher: Jose Villarreal describes this design, ‘Vase made by the Ando Company of Nagoya (c.1950-60) depicting a sensuous-looking orchid on a matt-black enamel ground’, as one of the seven highlights of the display. -
