Description
Antique 19th Century Bourbon Restauration Malachite and Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock
French, c. 1827
Dimensions: Height 65cm, width 32cm, depth 20cm
This beautiful early 19th Century mantel clock was created during the Bourbon Restauration period, and is a fine example of the distinct style. The clock stands on a rounded rectangular malachite base, from which springs four malachite columns. These feature ormolu bases and capitals, and support the architecturally shaped top of the clock. Both the base and top are decorated with foliate designed ormolu mounts. The silvered dial is painted with Roman numeral indices and is surrounded by an ornate ormolu border. The ormolu pendulum hangs below this, decorated in a similar manner to the dial's border.
The movement is stamped 'B.P&F', '3873' and inscribed 'Medaille D'Or / 1827', indicating that the clock won a Gold Medal at an Exposition.
The malachite is a later veneer added to the body of the clock. -
