Vintage Persian Gabbeh Rug with Blue Field and Traditional Symbols
-
Description
This attractive tribal rug is hand-knotted with vegetal-dyed local wool on an undyed wool foundation. It has a speckled light blue and ivory field with a large overall tri-color diamond pattern in beige, red, and turquoise. The large pattern is interspersed with smaller traditional symbols. Among these symbols, the large diamond pattern implies protection from evil, and the animals reflect activities of everyday life and livelihood. It is from southern Iran and is hand-made by traditional Luri and Qashqai tribal weavers.
The rug is bordered on all sides with small diamond and triangle patterns in red, beige, brown, and turquoise. The two ends have woolen fringes, while the long sides are bordered by barber-pole selvages. The rug is heavy and soft, in the manner of the style's original use as a sleeping rug. There is an expert four-inch repair in the border at the center of one fringe-end as seen in the last photograph; it is barely visible to the eye when the rug is on the floor.
The rug is colorful and cheerful. It has a flexible, soft, medium pile, and is a convenient size for use on the floor of any room, or on a table or atop a bed. -
