Description
Italian oil on canvas painting of a lacemaker by Paoletti
Italian, late 19th Century
Frame: Height 119cm, width 93cm, depth 5cm
Canvas: Height 101cm, width 76cm
This beautiful painting is by the Italian artist Antonio Ermolao Paoletti, who specialised in both genre painting and religious frescoes in Venice during the final decades of the 19th Century. The present piece is an exceptional example of his masterful genre scenes. The painting, contained within a giltwood frame, portrays a young woman momentarily distracted from her lace making by the chattering of two caged birds, the entire group set within a spare yet beautifully finished interior room. Paoletti’s colour palette is warm and satisfying, while his painterly manner—expressive brushstrokes predominate—demonstrates his skill as an artist.
The work is signed to the lower right ‘Antonio Paoletti di Giovi / Venezia’.
