Martin Rosenthal

American, 1899 - 1979

Martin Rosenthal, born in 1899 in Woburn, Massachusetts, was an influential American painter whose work emerged during a dynamic period of artistic experimentation in the early 20th century. He was deeply inspired by the movements of his time, including Expressionism and various styles of abstraction.
A pivotal moment in Rosenthal's career occurred at the Modern Art Exhibition of 1934, where his work garnered attention alongside pieces from renowned artists such as Chagall, Modigliani, Zorach, and Pissarro. This recognition highlighted his unique voice within the art community.
Rosenthal spent most of his life in and around New York City, yet his travels took him to Madagascar, Spain, and Japan, each location influencing his artistic perspective. He often worked in the basement of a modest home in Queens, New York, where he developed a distinctive style characterized by increasingly large canvases and vibrant colors.
As his artistic journey progressed, Rosenthal's works expanded in scale, sometimes becoming nearly impossible to remove from his basement studio. Tragically, many of his creations remained undiscovered until after his passing in 1974, leaving a significant yet underappreciated legacy in the world of modern art. Today, Martin Rosenthal's contributions continue to be celebrated for their innovative spirit and emotional depth.
