Description
Swedish design is minimalist, with an emphasis on functionality and clean lines. Minimalism may be currently in fashion, but there is one iteration of clean design that will never go out of style which is Scandinavian Modernism. It is no small achievement to exercise restraint in décor choices, while still managing to make a space feel cosy. These easy chairs are unique in many ways, even in our collection.
Like Axel Einar Hjorth’s minimalistic pine furniture, these easy chairs are also in the so-called “sportstugemöble”, defined by a minimalistic approach and expert craftsmanship, assuring that the furniture would last several lifetimes. Some of the most prominent Swedish designers created models for these summer residencies. Combining both straight lines and round lines, these easy chairs are very organic whilst retaining a simple, modern edge. Pine is a defining material of Scandinavian furniture design of the era, beloved for its sturdiness and aesthetic simplicity. Here, it serves as the perfect canvas to let the details of the design stand out. The upholstered cushions, the carved edges, and the iron against the pine all shine, creating an interesting mix of materials.
The thin iron fittings around the lower half of these chairs are aesthetically defining despite their simplicity. The large, round nails securing them to the pine body serve both a functional and aesthetic role.
Åby furniture factory was located in Tjureda parish, in Sweden’s Växjö municipality. The company primarily manufactured pine furniture, including the “SMI 110” chair, rocking chairs, and incomparable models like this easy chair.
