Description
This oil painting on canvas is unsigned. It is, however, in the style of late 19th/early 20th century dog paintings of the School of British Sporting Art -- by artists such as Arthur Wardle (1860-1949) or John Emms (1844-1912). It depicts a trio of three breeds of hunting terriers at rest in the open air in the early evening next to a wooden keg, a red tarpaulin, and a hanging lantern. The working day is over and the dogs are at rest. The painting is in a later, good gold frame. The scene presented reflects the Victorian/Edwardian passion for all dogs and their behaviors. It is the perfect gift for a present-day dog lover or hunter.
The painting itself measures 12" x 9.5". The overall dimensions including the frame are listed above. There is an old patch repair on the back of the canvas that corresponds to the mid-body of the dog who is sitting up. It is unnoticeable in the painting. There is very faint and charming craquelure throughout, which attests to its age and origin. The dogs are expertly painted with precise brush strokes, and the personalities of the dogs are evident. -
