Weng Jijun

Chinese, 1955

Weng Jijun, born in 1955 in Shanghai, China, is a distinguished artist deeply immersed in the rich tradition of Chinese lacquer art. His innovative approach marries age-old techniques with contemporary themes, using wood panels and lacquer as his primary materials. Weng’s work has evolved from early still lifes and Buddhist imagery to abstract visual explorations that celebrate lacquer as a medium in its own right.
In addition to his striking lacquer paintings, Weng creates sculptures employing the bodiless lacquer technique, expanding the boundaries of this art form. His notable series include the ‘Red’ series, ‘Landscape’ series, and ‘Buddha’ series, along with more recent works such as the ‘Memory,’ ‘Gathering,’ and ‘Angle’ series.
Weng graduated from Jiangxi Normal University College of Fine Arts in 1981 and later earned a degree from the Mural Painting department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1996. He has since dedicated himself to teaching at the Shanghai Art & Design Academy. Recognized for his contributions to the arts, Weng is a member of the China Artists Association, the China Professional Lacquer Steering Committee, and serves as the vice director of the Working Committee of Lacquer Painting within the Shanghai Artists Association.
