FIRM ATTRIBUTION "GEORGE OAKLEY ENGLAND" CIRCA 1805
Magnificent and Extremey Rare Pair of Mahogany - Ebony and Gilt Bronze Mounted Library- Drawing Room Rectangular Tables.
There are a Number of Pointers Declaring these to be of Oakleys Workshop . Firstly the Choice of Dramatic Mahogany Timbers with a Crossbanding of Ebony Inset From the Outer Perimeter, Finished Edges with his Reconisible Trademark Gilt, Moulded and Chased Metal Cappings. Finally, Oakley was the Leading Exponent in England of the Andre Charles Boulle Technique of Brass Inlaying, not Copying Exactly the French Master Ebonists Typically French Fashion - but using the Roman and Egyptian Style with English Simplicity to Achieve his Rather Individual and Extraordinary Works.
Much Like the Other Superior and Successful Firms such as Gillows - Chippendale the Choice of Tmbers can be a Good Pointer to Attribution. Being Successful Earned One the Chance of First Choice of Timbers at the Docks.
Design......A Design Favoured by Oakey was the caduceus , the Traditional Symbol of Hermes and Features Two Snakes Winding Around an Often Winged Staff. This such Design is Used on this Pair of Tables to Great Effect.
