Glazed Ceramic Tea Bowl by Toshiko Takaezu
-
Description
A ceramic tea bowl (chawan) with high foot by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 - 2011). This particular chawan form is supported by a higher foot rim than usual which was left unglazed intentionally. The well-balanced form is further accentuated with a beautiful deep ocher color glaze with very subtle rose color sections on both the exterior and interior. The color shift is subdued and required attention from the viewers. The exterior of the bowl also features thin grooved lines that render this piece very elegant.
The artist's work was heavily influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition and aesthetics. The bowl is signed with the artist's cypher on the underside. -
