Quartz has many varieties, from the water-clear rock crystal to purple amethyst and banded agate. Most Stone Age tools were made from this hard crystal, and in the fourth millennium BC, Mesopotamians engraved quartz cylinders with some of the earliest written words, using them as stamps on clay.
Formed millions of years ago under extreme geologic pressure, quartz crystals often grow together in clusters. But their most amazing feature is their ability to convert mechanical energy into electricity and vice versa. When you squeeze quartz, it generates an electric charge. When you pass electricity through a crystal, it squeezes itself and vibrates back and forth. This effect, called piezoelectricity from the Greek piezein “to push,” creates a kind of battery with a positive charge on one face and a negative charge on the other. When you press the switch on a gas barbecue, it squeezes a piezoelectric crystal, which generates a voltage and makes the spark that starts the flame. The reverse action is how quartz watches keep such accurate time.
This amazing physical energy translates just as powerfully to the metaphysical world. Since antiquity, traditional healers have called quartz the “master healer” because it amplifies the power of other elements nearby and because it can be programmed by focusing intention upon it. This allows one to achieve virtually any goal. Clear quartz is a stone of light providing a clear path for higher vibrations from spiritual realms to the physical world.
Blue quartz is thought to enhance, communication, and self-expression.
