Henle's journey began in Dortmund, Germany, in 1909. Initially studying physics, his passion for visual storytelling led him to the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Lichtbildwesen in Munich. After completing his formal education, he spent a transformative year capturing the artistic wonders of Florence. The subsequent years saw him traverse Italy, contributing captivating images for the Lloyd steamship line.

In 1935–6, Henle embarked on a photographic odyssey through China and Japan, showcasing his keen eye for cultural nuances. His talents garnered attention, leading to a significant assignment for Time-Life in 1936, with his work prominently featured in Fortune magazine. His artistic journey continued as he ventured to the United States, establishing connections with Life magazine that eventually paved the way for his emigration to the country. Officially becoming a U.S. citizen in 1942, Henle later found solace and inspiration in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, where he relocated in 1958.
