Description
This exceptional chair has a peculiar design with numerous qualities that distinguish it from its contemporaries, even from mid-century chair designs in general. From the shell seat to the circular arm and tripod legs, this model is stunning from all directions.
Such unique designs had mixed perceptions even in the 1960s, Hans J. Wegner’s Shell Chair designed in 1963 being the most well-known example. The design was ahead of its time and did not reach the public’s acceptance, however when Carl Hansen & Søn introduced the Shell chair again in 1998, it resulted in an immediate success. The sophisticated and airy silhouette of this chair consists of a sleek solid wood frame with a curved, circular arm that is held by the three pillar-like legs. Both the upholstered backrest and seat have a floating looks thanks to their minimal attachment to the wooden structure. The three quadrant circle that comprises the arm and back holds the backrest via two patinated brass ball joints. The shell seat has a beautiful angle that lends a welcoming look to the design. It is held up by five small, metal pillars that stand on the stretchers. The round, circular shapes are balanced out by the straight lines of the three stretchers connecting the sleek, tapered tripod legs. There are numerous structural solutions that show architectural knowledge, which isn’t surprising as many mid-century designers were also trained architects.
The upholstery’s bouclé fabric adds to the stylish look, while the light colour highlights the wood’s gorgeous colour and pattern. European mid-century designers believed that a chair should always be comfortable to sit on and beautiful to look at from all sides and angles. Crafted by hand in Europe, this tripod shell armchair is a perfect example of this.
