    About
Braque’s traumatic experiences in the First World War put an immediate halt to the momentum he had built through his invention of Cubism between the years of 1906-1910. As he returned to Paris from the War, having sustained a serious head injury, the artist took a couple of years to readjust to normal life. By the 1920s however, Braque had already reasserted himself in the studio and was able to regain his notoriety in the art world, mainly due to the creation of a series of impressive still-life works. Included in the series, was Verre et compotier (1922), whereby a wine glass and a newspaper headline, half hidden by the bowl of grapes at the heart of the work, stand as a reference to Braque’s continued interest in the Cubist discoveries. During this period, Braque noticeably imbues a new-found depth in his paintings, arguably inspired by his experience in the battlefield, and incorporates subtle references to simpler, uncomplicated, pre-War Cubist days.
