The Panamint Shoshone lived in Death Valley, one of the harshest environments in this country. While they migrated to the mountains over the summer, it is still remarkable that they produced beautiful coiled baskets that have always been highly prized. Moreover, bottleneck baskets are valued for their sculptural quality. They are much more difficult to weave than the tray or bowl. The weaver has to make the coil turn and then go up vertically while maintaining evenness of coil and stitching. -
