Franz Anton von Scheidel

Franz Anton von Scheidel (1731–1801) left an indelible mark on the world of natural history artistry. Hailing from Germany, he gained renown for his botanical illustrations featured in Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin's seminal work, the Hortus botanicus Vindobonensis (Botanical Garden of Vienna). Published in three installments between 1770 and 1776, this opus meticulously cataloged the flora inhabiting the university's botanical garden, showcasing 300 meticulously hand-colored copper engravings by the talented von Scheidel.
Beyond his collaboration with Jacquin, von Scheidel's artistic endeavors extended far and wide. He embarked on numerous projects, producing thousands of drawings spanning plants, fish, birds, and mammals, serving an array of patrons and leaving an enduring legacy in the annals of natural history illustration.
