Three Piece Set by Josef Hoffmann w/ Beech Frame & Clarence House Fabric
-
Description
This elegant and refined three piece living room set, consisting of two chairs and a settee were designed by the legendary Josef Hoffman in Austria circa 1905. They feature concave demilune open form silhouettes with evenly spaced vertical supports connecting the curvilinear tops and bottoms- all in beautiful polished beech demonstrating a stunning natural woodgrain. The seats and backs of each of the piece are subtly concave, offering a wonderful formal complement to the rounded forms displayed elsewhere in these pieces. These pieces have been newly reupholstered in Clarence house fabric offering cubist and geometric forms in an abundance of subdued gemstone hues (including muted ruby, emerald and tourmaline) that accompanies the tonality of the wood perfectly. Quite simply, these are some of the most important and stunning examples of the 20th century design objects on the market (and a first rate example of Viennese secession furniture for connoisseurs of visual history).
Josef Hoffmann (15 December 1870 – 7 May 1956) was an Austrian-Moravian architect and designer, and one of the most celebrated (and influential) practitioners in both of these fields during the 20th century. He was one of the founders of the Viennese Secession movement and co-establisher of the Wiener Werkstätte. His most famous architectural project is arguably the Stoclet Palace, in Brussels, (1905–1911) a pioneering work of Modern Architecture, Art Deco and peak of Vienna Secession architecture. Restored to mint condition. These are museum quality pieces. (Comes with original certificate of authenticity)
