Southeast Asian Rain Drum
-
Description
This a very large Southeast Asian patinated cast bronze rain drum or frog drum. The intended use of the rain drum was ceremonial; it was used to invoke rain and serve as an instrument; the drum is currently adapted to serve as a coffee or side table. The bronze drum has a tapered form and is typically from east Burma or Myanmar and Laos. This particular drum has intricate loop handles on side and more modest loops on the opposing side. Both the top and sides are decorated with concentric circles and the top is centered by a sunburst or star motif. The flat round top features four embellishments of double frogs sitting of each other. The table has a small dog-like animal on one side and further decorations. The drum is substantial with a rich natural patinated original surface. There are minor dings and a slight dent to one side--signs of age and use.
