Mid-Century Modern Trunk Model “Sabara” in Hardwood by Sergio Rodrigues, 1965

Available today, this spectacular Brazilian Modern Trunk model “Sabara” in Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda is nothing less than spectacular!

The "Sabará" trunk was designed in 1965 by the master Sergio Rodrigues.

Versatile and with a lot of storage space, this piece can be used in different ambiances for different purposes. This trunk has a beautiful four legs structure (sticks in the corners) made of solid Brazilian hardwood. It also has an outstanding Brazilian hardwood veneer, patinated with soft marks left by the time. The nice round handles match very well with the midcentury style.

The piece was restored by one of the best wood restorers in Rio de Janeiro. Besides the minor marks of time in the lower corners, the piece is in excellent condition.This decorative piece is showcased in our gallery next to a Carlo Hauner armchair and looks nothing less than spectacular.

For the history buffs here, it goes…Sergio Rodrigues started working in the 1950s when the foundations of modern Brazilian architecture were already laid out, yet furniture design was still nascent. Rodrigues set himself the task of designing furniture that was both truly Brazilian and modernist at the same time. Over the course of his career, he accomplished this task by defining a robust, modern, and pure language reflected in his work.

Regards the wood. Brazilian rosewood, also called Jacaranda, is perhaps one of the most beautiful woods in the world. It is regarded as one of the finest tone woods; hard, stiff, and highly resonant with a glass-like ring that sustains; it has a floral scent, like roses, thus the name.

However, extensive logging over the past three centuries has virtually eliminated this tree from the Brazilian forests, so that today it is not supposed to be logged. The only Material that can be sold legally is old stock. By owning a vintage piece made of old Jacaranda, you’re not only getting a beautiful collectible but also helping this species to recuperate.
