Brazilian Modern 3 Seat Sofa in Salmon Linen & Hardwood, Sergio Rodrigues, 1960

Available today, this Mid-Century Modern three seat sofa is made of a solid hardwood frame with linen upholstery in salmon. The base is made of Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda and showcases colorful veins.

This sofa has been re-upholstered by some of the best upholsterers in Brazil, a group of upholster masters that worked with the actual Sergio Rodrigues for 20 years. The wood has been refinished and besides the marks of time, which ultimately give character, the piece is in excellent condition.

This sofa could easily be flexed into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, or contemporary environment and can be played up to be more maximalist or Minimalist with its surroundings.

Last images showcase the piece in multiple publications, such as contemporary magazines, Sergio Rodrigues by Icatu book and Oca’s manufacture manual. But the actual last one shows the sofa in its original condition. Ta ta! What a change!

For the history buffs here, it goes…Sergio Rodrigues started working in the 1950s when the foundations of modern Brazilian architecture were already laid out, yet furniture design was still nascent. Rodrigues set himself the task of designing furniture that was both truly Brazilian and modernist at the same time. Over the course of his career, he accomplished this task by defining a robust, modern, and pure language reflected in his work.
