Clairtone Sound Corporation: A Mid-Century Icon of Style and Sound
Founded in 1958 in Toronto, Canada, by Hungarian-born entrepreneur Peter Munk and furniture designer David Gilmour, Clairtone Sound Corporation quickly gained international acclaim for its innovative stereo systems and modern cabinetry. Known for combining cutting-edge audio technology with sleek designs, Clairtone epitomized the elegance and ethos of the Swinging Sixties.
The company’s most iconic creation, the Project G stereo, debuted in 1964 and became a design legend with its rosewood cabinet and cantilevered “sound globes.” Featured in films like The Graduate and endorsed by luminaries such as Frank Sinatra and Hugh Hefner, the Project G set a new standard for modular audio systems and remains a collector's treasure today.
Despite its early success, Clairtone faced financial struggles and shifted its focus to televisions in the late 1960s, a move that proved untimely. After years of mounting losses, the company closed in 1972, leaving behind a legacy of design innovation and cultural significance.
