ORWELL, George.
Animal Farm.
A Fairy Story.
Stock Code 110577
London, Secker & Warburg, 1954
Current price £350.00
Published to accompany the animated film. The first illustrated edition of George Orwell's most important novel, Animal Farm, intended by the author to serve as a satirical take on the events that led up to the Russian Revolution and Stalinism whilst simultaneously illustrating the weaknesses inherent in the human condition that make any political and economic ideal almost unworkable. As Orwell states himself in his 1946 essay Why I Write, the motivation behind Animal Farm was 'to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole'.
Illustrated by the cartoonists Joy Batchelor and John Halas, and published to coincide with the release of the animated film adaptation of Animal Farm, which was directed by the husband and wife duo.
First illustrated edition; 8vo (20.5 x 14.5 cm); 38 in-text illustrations by Joy Batchelor and John Halas, additional pictorial double-page title on pink ground; publisher's red cloth, title lettered in silver to upper cover and spine, unclipped pink pictorial dustjacket, tape-repairs to top spine-end of jacket, small closed tear to rear panel, edges a little worn, internally very clean; 108, [2]pp. -
