The Haut Bois Console is an elegant work of contrasts between its high, thin brass-plated metal base and its Macassar ebony chest, each grain of which is encrusted with metal and gold dust. The drawers are covered in beech lacquered in a striking shade of bright red. As if placed in levitation, the Haut Bois console is the work of an illusionist, of a conjurer: it recreates a mass suspended above a base which seems too thin to support its weight. As with a magic trick, the console questions balance, perspective, and the very mass of matter.
