Spring Freshet
-
Description
There is a real sense of time and place in this Indiana scene titled “Spring Freshet”. Through a series of visual clues left by the artist, the story is revealed and we discover that the location is Brown County, Indiana, where the artist lived between 1910 and 1916, and that the time of year is Spring. The architectural style of the structure provides another hint. This building is known as the “Hetherington Cabin” and was built in 1860. It still stands today, and is located “on the road up Jackson's Branch”.
Baumann carved the blocks for this woodcut in 1915, and this impression is from the Third edition which was printed in 1931. The colors here are remarkably rich, saturated and fresh, in hues of blue, purple and vibrant green. This print is numbered 29 of 120 lower right, and titled lower left by the artist's daughter, Ann Baumann. -
