Canadian
Tom Hjorleifson is a sculptor based in Canmore, Alberta, where he crafts pieces ranging from intimate, hand-held works to impressive, large-scale installations in bronze and stainless steel.
Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Tom grew up in both Winnipeg and Calgary. His early experiences at the YMCA were pivotal, fostering both personal growth and leadership skills. Extensive travel across the globe has further enriched his artistic vision.
In 1980, after earning a Bachelor of Physical Education with a focus on Outdoor Pursuits from the University of Calgary, Tom settled in Canmore, where he now lives with his wife and assistant, Patricia.
A self-taught artist, Tom began his sculpting journey in clay in 1990 and joined the Canmore Artist and Artisans Guild in 1992. His work has found homes in private and corporate collections worldwide. While bronze remains his medium of choice, he also explores forms in steel, stone, and clay.
"The inspiration for my work comes from the breathtaking Rocky Mountain wilderness," Tom explains. "Personal encounters with wildlife ignite a passion in me to capture the essence of those fleeting moments. I hope my art contributes to the environmental movement and highlights the beauty of nature."
For Tom, the process of creating art is an exhilarating and compelling adventure, one that he finds both irresistible and deeply fulfilling.
