Edmund C. Coates

American, 1816 - 1871
Edmund C. Coates was a versatile painter of the nineteenth century, known for his diverse range of subjects, including landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and historical scenes. Born in England, he later made New York City his home, where he frequently exhibited at the National Academy of Design.
Influenced by the Hudson River School, Coates created idealized depictions of the Hudson River Valley and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, alongside romanticized images of ancient Italian ruins. His works are celebrated for their beauty and attention to detail. Today, his paintings can be found in prestigious institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Historical Society, the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Shelburne Museum, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
