Grace Hartigan
American, 1922 - 2008
Grace Hartigan was an American painter associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement. She was born on March 28, 1922, in Newark, New Jersey, and studied at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts and the Art Students League of New York.
Hartigan's paintings are known for their bold colors and dynamic brushwork. She often worked in a semi-abstract style, using recognizable imagery as a starting point for her compositions. Her work was heavily influenced by the work of the French painter Henri Matisse and the American poet Frank O'Hara.
Hartigan's work was exhibited widely during her lifetime and can be found in the collections of many major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Hartigan passed away on November 15, 2008, in Baltimore, Maryland.
