ANNE-SOPHIE ØGAARD
Norwegian, 1971
Born in Oslo, Norway
Currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark
Anne-Sophie Øgaard explores the delicate interplay between sculpture and painting in her artistic practice. She believes sculpture possesses a certain magic, where the viewer's perspective can alter the appearance of the work, making it seem to shift or transform. In contrast, a painting remains constant regardless of where one stands. This contrast inspires her to investigate how her paintings are created, perceived, and experienced in relation to their environment.
For Øgaard, light plays a crucial role, acting as a medium that influences the perception of form and color. She creates an illusion of depth and perspective, which evolves as the light changes, thus affecting how viewers engage with her work. This dynamic prompts her to consider the "architecture" of her ideas, focusing on simplifying forms to their fundamental components.
Her process involves a dialogue between addition and subtraction, where the layers of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction form the core of her artistic expression. She views paint as an intrinsic part of her work, making it uniquely hers. Though her pieces possess dimensional qualities akin to sculpture, Øgaard firmly identifies as a painter, employing unconventional materials such as sand, cement, and plaster.
Anne-Sophie Øgaard earned her MFA in Visual Communication from ESDI in Paris in 2005.
