apanese Bamboo Art Sculpture Kawashima Shigeo Soul's Trance

$ 8,600
  • Description
    A contemporary bamboo sculpture art pieces by Japanese artist Kawashima Shigeo (1958-). Entitled
    "Soul's Trace", this bespoken piece was made in 2009 and purchased from Tai Modern, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Using thin strips of Madake bamboo in Midare-Ami (irregular plaiting) technique with twill thread tie-knotting, the artist created this piece in his iconic style by linking two constructed rings together. The composition is fixed yet the airy nature of the work gives a kinetic illusion. A great example of the artist's signature aesthetic: an ethereal cosmos appearance that appears weightless, and in motion.
    The work is signed Shige on bamboo plaque on the base. It comes with a gallery information sheet from Tai Modern,
    Born in Tokyo, Kawashima Shigeo moved to Kyushu and trained in Beppu, Oita and studied under Okazaki Chikuhosai II. Working in Sagamihara, Kanagawa, his sculptures have entered more than 30 collections throughout Japan, Europe, and the United States, including the Philaphelphia Musuem of Art and San Francisco Asian Art Museum. He created some large-scale onsite sculptures as well including "Wa' for the Kennedy Center.
