Description
Pair of Empire-style marble and ormolu vases by Raingo
French, Late 19th Century
Height 37cm, width 22cm, depth 18cm
This superb pair of vases combines stunning veined grey marble with shining gilt-bronze mounts, which are designed by Raingo Frères. Established in 1823 by four brothers, the renowned furnishing company are famed for their clocks, bronzes, and other pieces.
Of an ovoid form, the tapered marble bodies are cast from a highly unusual grey marble, which is richly veined. The vases are mounted with several ormolu elements: both vessels sit atop circular tiered bases engraved with foliate and geometric decoration. They are surmounted by gilt-bronze lids decorated with similar motifs and capped with a pine cone finial. On each side is an applied lion mask holding a ring drop handle in its mouth, and the lions and handles are surrounded by a foliate half-cartouche.
The bases are signed ‘RAINGO’.
With the mounts designed in the elegant Empire style, this stunning pair would be a fine addition to any modern interior.
