Exceptional pair of 19th Century carved 'Black Forest' open armchairs of finely carved Linden wood.
The top carved crests are of interwoven branches with acorns and oak leaves above the oval, padded and upholstered backs which are also surrounded with trailing oak leaves.
The frames are lifelike carvings of tree branches and outswept arms and shaped arm supports have manchette elbow rests. Having padded, upholstered seat with a serpentine front and a shaped, carved apron of acorns and oak leaves to continue the theme.
Raised on shaped legs, terminating in original castors with unusual horn wheels.
'Black Forest Ware' is usually adorned with carvings that depict forest animals, forest trees, branches, and leaves. 'Black Forest' carvings were made into all different kinds of furniture and curios.
Swiss wood carvers became world-renowned and featured at many international exhibitions.
