Carl Kauba
American, 1865 - 1922
Carl Kauba (1865-1922) was an Austrian sculptor known for his bronze sculptures of Native Americans and Western subjects. He was born in Vienna, Austria and trained at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Kauba developed a fascination with the American West and traveled to the United States several times, where he visited Native American reservations and became deeply interested in their way of life.
Kauba's sculptures are highly detailed and realistic, often portraying Native Americans engaged in everyday activities such as hunting, fishing, and cooking. He also created sculptures of cowboys, horses, and other Western subjects. Kauba's work was highly popular during his lifetime and remains sought after by collectors today.
Unfortunately, Kauba's reputation was tarnished in the 20th century when it was discovered that some of his sculptures were actually cast by other artists and then signed with his name. However, many of his genuine works still exist and are highly valued for their historical and artistic significance.
