Description
An antique lacquered and gilt wood buddha head on a custom wood stand circa early 19th century. The statue was finely sculpted with a wood core and the surface was decorated with a dark red lacquer with remanent of gold leaf gilt. This type of Buddha statues was from Northern Myanmar (Burma) and known as the "Shan-style". Lacquered and gilt on wood was a common medium as well as carved marble. The style was characterized by a bell shaped usnisa (turban) on the head of the buddha (usually detachable instead of fixed), tight hair curls, and the facial features and serene expression that was influenced by the iconography of Indian Buddhism art.
The head shows extensive patina, some of which may be from later and repetitive application of gold leaves on the surface par local tradition. The usnisa is detached. It is displayed on a custom--made wood stand. The height of the Buddha head only is 16.5".
