The Empire State Building Art Deco Skyscraper Silhouetted, New York in the 1970s

$ 6,500
  • Description
    The Empire State Building is vividly portrayed as a stand-alone Art Deco skyscraper in an uncluttered New York City sky. Surrounding it is the emptiness of midtown Manhattan. It allowed Photographer Mitchell Funk to embrace the unoccupied space and make a statement about graphic simplicity. The image was taken in 1971 and at that time, there were no competing edifices to interfere with the Empire State Building's iconic shape. In the foreground, Funk frames two statues. They both thrust into the emptiness of the New York sky and act as a counterpoint to the 100-story Art Deco tower. In traditional picture-making, the center of the composition normally commands the viewers eye. In a radical move, Funk abandons traditional thinking and leaves the picture's center completely empty. This image is a stunning example of Funk blending the abstract and representational. It was a finalist for the Time-Life Series - Life Library Of Photography.
