Solid Wood Brutalist Dining Set, Europe 20th Century

$ 10,450
  • Description
    The term Brutalism is a rough translation by British architectural critic Reyner Banham of béton brut, words that the pioneer modernist architect Le Corbusier used to characterise architectural works made from raw concrete. In addition to raw concrete, Brutalist design is represented by industrial materials such as wood, glass, steel, brass, and brick. In terms of shapes and forms, Brutalist design is either organic – with rough and unpolished textures – or extremely minimal and streamlined, caring for function over anything else, like this dining room set.

    The table of this set is inherently simplistic, both in visual and technical terms. Yet, the design is very balanced with well-thought-out proportions. The solid dark wood defines the look with a natural pattern and texture. The table is a nod to modernist design with traditional craftsmanship and boasts a robust, almost industrial aesthetic, marrying form and function. Furthermore, it’s solid wooden slabs are seamlessly connected through traditional joints, showcasing the commitment to meticulous craftsmanship.

    The chairs are also visually stimulating, featuring both angular and rounded shapes. The slightly curved backrests have decorative razorblade-shaped cutouts, an unparalleled design feature. The style and shape of the seats and legs have a pared-down look that relies on the natural beauty of the wood. The backs have a unique, arched shape formed by the elongated back legs that extend upwards - and towards each other - to form the backrest support. Thanks to the seamless joinery, there are no visible screws, making the chairs effortlessly elegant. While the high level of craftsmanship is evident from afar as well, the smaller details become evident upon closer inspection.

    From architectural descriptions to individual pieces of furniture, materials, and colour palettes, Brutalist style seems to have earned a permanent spot on the décor trend list. Today, we're seeing Brutalist furniture emerge through statement pieces like the chairs of this set, that can simultaneously blend into or become the focal point of a variety of interiors.
