William III Sampler, stitched in 1831, By Emma Arthey. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. An unusual and wonderful border which has alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9. The letters and numbers are enclosed in a repeating geometric border around the edges of the sampler. Colours green, gold, silver, pink, brown and blue. Verse reads, 'O that I may be grateful now, To give my Maker Praise, Who Places goodness in my view, To crown my early days.'. Signed and dated, 'Emma Arthey wrought this in the ninth year of her age And in the year of our Lord Dec.21 1831'. A good set of motifs, including a house, dogs, fir trees, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, blossoming trees, birds and flowering trees. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with brown paper and sealed with tape. There is a document attached to the reverse of the sampler, with family history researched on an ancestory website. (not verified). Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Origin: England Period: 19th Century Condition: Good. Very Good. One tiny hole. No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
