    Qing dynasty hand-carved lacquered and giltwood figure of Guan Di, circa 1780-1840. A famous Han Dynasty general (lived 160-220), known for his skill in military affairs and his loyalty. Highly praised for generations, and then finally deified by Ming dynasty emperor Shenzong in 1594. Today Guan Di is known in China by his title "Guan Gong," the god of war, status and protection.
    Niches carved in the rear of statue functioned as compartments for prayer scrolls.
