This exceptional oil painting is by the Italian painter Arturo Ricci (1854-1919). Known for his genre scenes which celebrate the lavish Rococo lifestyle, this painting is a particularly superb example of his work.

Working in an almost hyper-realistic style, the artist depicts a grandmother’s birthday party, set within a richly decorated courtly interior. The grandmother and grandfather sit in the centre of the room, as a queue of guests enter the room to greet them. At the front of the queue is a daughter with two granddaughters, one of whom embraces the grandmother, whilst the other waits patiently with bouquet in hand. Further figures crowd behind the grandparents, and a sleeping dog lies at the foot of the painting. The artist impressively conveys a sense of familial conviviality within the aristocratic setting.

The figures are beautifully dressed in Rococo fashions, finely painted to mimic the textures of the silks and satins. The surrounding drawing room is similarly ornate, filled with gilded furniture and superb large-scale wall frescos. The painting is filled with a variety of bright colours – a hallmark of Ricci’s scenes.

Ensconced in a carved giltwood frame, the painting is signed in the lower right-hand corner ‘Arturo Ricci’.

With its charming subject and colours, this painting would be the focal point of the appropriate interior.
