During World War II, a small miracle occurred in the world of design: the American decorator and designer Ernestin Virden Kannon met the young architect Matteo D’Agostino in Ravello.
The two immediately connected on a personal and creative level. In 1948, they founded the ceramic factory “Ernestine” based in Vietri.
Design and form became the stylistic signatures of these two protagonists:
Ernestin, with her watercolor technique, brought to life a series of strongly modern decorative motifs, influenced by Japanese calligraphy; Matteo, heir to a family of ceramic producers in Salerno, was a creator of unprecedented forms and unusual interior designs.
Together, they renewed the Vietri ceramic tradition and conquered foreign markets, especially the American one, becoming in the 1950s one of the leading factories of industrial design in Italy. These were years of splendor and glamour, attracting clients like royal families and personalities such as Jacqueline Kennedy.
The couple was soon joined by the young German ceramic engineer, Horst Simonis, thanks to whom the factory became a true center of research and experimentation. - More Information
