Description
By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures are their atmospheric light and disciplined, functionalist design that is not short of unique decorative elements. This lamp was manufactured by Itsu, or Itä-Suomen Sähkö (eng. Eastern Finland Electricity), a small, then lesser-known manufacturer that produced characteristic models in small quantities, mainly inspired by Paavo Tynell.
With its nature-inspired organic look, this chandelier is reminiscent of Finnish icons Paavo Tynell and Mauri Almari’s design language. Crafted from brass, this chandelier features a delicate frame that has been expertly designed to showcase the three opal glass shades and the curved arms. The glass shades have a milky appearance that diffuses the light beautifully, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in any room. One of the defining features of mid-century lighting is its marriage of functionality and aesthetics; the era's designers believed that a well-designed lighting fixture could serve a practical purpose while also acting as a piece of art. This chandelier is without a doubt a piece of art, thanks to the delicate floral details. Stemming from the base, resembling a bouquet, these floral elements are sculpted beautifully, with a realistic appearance that is a testament to the manufacturer’s expert skills. This floral decoration is reminiscent of Finnish designer Paavo Tynell’s work. Itsu merged with Idman Oy in the 1950s, a large manufacturer who owned Taito, the company founded by Paavo Tynell. Thus, designs from Itsu of that time period bear some resemblance with the signature style of Tynell, and some would even say that they were heavily influenced by it. Moreover, this lamp undoubtedly exudes a timeless elegance and showcases the meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship. Itsu’s creations were a fusion of form and function, with a focus on decorative and stylish lamps.
This chandelier is the perfect way to add a touch of elegance to any space without being overwhelming. Its expert craftsmanship and unique character showcase the timelessness of the golden age of mid-century Finnish lighting design.
