"Lehman Autobus" German WindUp Toy By The Ernest Paul Lehman Company, Circa 1903

$ 1,675
  • Description
    Iconic and rare antique tin toy, highly sought after by collectors of Lehman Toys, and fine quality wind-up toys. Without the "Lehman Autobus" your collection is not complete. This toy double decker bus was patented and manufactured in 1903 by The Ernest Paul Lehman Toy Company of Brandenburg, Germany. Quite rare because there were not that many buses (known as an "Omnibus") used for public transport at that time ;in addition many examples were discarded because of the rough use of this floor toy. This is the first known toy version of a bus manufactured as "E.P.L. No. 590" in the Lehman catalogue; and referenced and illustrated on page 78 of the book "Lehman Toys" by Jurgen & Marianne Cieslik in 1982.
    Note: The number "590" stamped on both sides of the bus.

    The toy is authentic; with all of the appropriate markings; and in original surface with no touch up paint or restoration to the lithography. There are a couple of small dents here and there (see images), and some losses to the finish, but by and large---a wonderful example ,with the majority of the surface intact. The 1907 patent marking on the front grill (see image) was more than likely for export.

    It works great, just as it did when played with in 1903, amazing for a 120 year old child's toy. Simply hold the toy with one fingure on the wheels (so they don't turn when winding); wind up the attached wind-up key; pace on the floor and watch it ride away. I don't recommend you do this on a table top least it take off and fall to the floor. (Please see operational video attached to this listing).

    Dimensions:
    8 1/4" long x 5 1/4" high x 3 1/4" wide

    Note: After 40 plus years of dealing and collecting toys, I am justly qualified to guarantee and present the authenticity of antique and vintage toys and children's playthings; important considering the fakes and reproductions in the marketpla
